Should participants want to make a larger piece (not over 12x12), during the class they can purchase encaustic board on line or bring with them cut pieces of birch plywood--no gesso board or canvas as the wax doesn’t adhere to gesso and the wax will crack on canvas. Students are also free to bring their own hot plates should they desire but must also bring an extension cord and surge protector.
Workshop # 6
Jill Hackney
This class is for intermediate to advanced painters, oil or acrylic.
direct or reflected and it’s impact on the object. The light creates a connection in the composition, each object absorbing and reflecting, becoming a mirror of it’s surroundings. Participants will provide their own paint, medium, containers, brushes and canvas, canvas board, clay board or whatever surface they choose to paint on.
Students will need to bring their full set of paints
My personal preference for colors is as follows: I do not recommend using "hues" as they do not give you the clarity or intensity of the more expensive professional colors. When given an option, don't buy Cadmium Yellow Medium Hue, purchase Cadmium Yellow Medium. You will see the difference and it's worth it. The "hues" do not mix the same with other colors as the true cadmiums and cobalts do, as well as cerulean.
Titanium White Cadmium Yellow Light Cadmium Red
Cerulean Blue Cadmium Yellow Medium Alizarin Crimson
Cobalt Blue Deep Cadmium Yellow Deep Burnt Sienna
Yellow Ochre
Students are certainly welcome to add your personal preferences to this list, or leave off those they don't like. The list I have provided is strictly my taste for my palette. I highly recommend purchasing Alizarin Crimson and Cobalt Blue Deep because together, with some Titanium White, a painter can make the most beautiful purples that can't be gotten with other colors.
I use Liquin for my medium, but students can bring a medium of their choice
If they are using oil paint, they will need to bring Odorless Mineral Spirits
Paint Brushes (small to larger ones) I use brushes from 1/2 inch to 3 inches
A can to hold water or Mineral Spirits
A palette
A roll or two of paper towels
a stretched canvas or panel from 12"x12" up to 18"x18". If a student wants to go larger, that's fine, but I'm trying to be reasonable with size in hopes to have a finished painting.
A Mason (canning) jar, no lid necessary as subject matter for the painting.

Painting water is a fairly complex subject. Jill will cover how water, is affected by its surroundings, reflections, depth and clarity. The painting of oceans, rivers, lakes and ponds can be beautiful, but managing to get the water and reflections to looklike actual water can be challenging. Jill sees light in layers, not only the color of the object, but also the color of the light,
Each student will leave the workshop with printed materials and will have access to 4 hot pallets, as well as, two heat guns, one iron, one torch, cut mat board for practice, collage materials, encaustic medium, and a whole lotta fun! Participants will provide their own paint, medium, containers and brushes. (Brushes have to be natural Bristol as synthetic melts. Small goat hair hake brushes are inexpensive and awesome) There are beginner kits available ($36-$60) at the following:
